Community Based Instruction (CBI) at Cedar Lane

Fri, 12/15/2017 - 12:50pm

The High School CBI program has been transformed!  Ms. Kathy Wah, our related arts team leader, has been planning and implementing CBI for our high school students.  CBI provides meaningful experiences for our students in the community and it’s an opportunity for our community members to engage with our students.

Ms. Wah has managed to find multiple destinations for our students in the Maple Lawn and Columbia communities.  Some examples of destinations include…

  • Zips Dry Cleaning
  • The Post Office
  • Dunkin Donuts
  • Food LIon
  • Ellie’s Flowers
  • Columbia Mall
  • Home Depot
  • Fulton Elementary School
  • CVS Pharmacy
  • Harris Teeter
  • High’s

Our goal is to design experiences that encourage independence in the community.  Students have an individualized purpose and goal for each trip. The following are some of the skills that we are targeting on CBI trips…

  • Opening doors
  • Communicating with selected members of the community
  • Communicating wants and needs in public places
  • Traveling safely in public spaces
    • Curbs
    • Steps
    • Parking lots
    • Stores and offices
  • Exchanging money
  • Ordering Food
  • Locating and selecting products in a store

Access to the community is critical for our students!  Many thanks to Ms. Wah for leading, planning, and implementing the High School Team’s CBI program!
